The momentum was just building in municipalities to ban plastic bags when I was Mayor and City Council Member in Sunnyvale. I championed the cause to ban plastic bags by raising it as a study issue and pushing it through council before my final term was over.
With deepest thanks to city staff, my colleagues on council, and support from Sunnyvale’s residents, we passed the ordinance on December 6, 2011, before my final meeting.
“It certainly has been a long journey that we’ve gone through,” said councilman Otto Lee, an initial proponent of the bag ban study issue. “And many other jurisdictions throughout California and throughout the country and even other countries since then have been adopting this ban, and I certainly do believe this EIR is very comprehensive.”
City by city, block by block, this is how we create change by working together.
