FAQ About Potential Green Topics

  1. Definition: gases the cause the greenhouse effect (or warming of the earth’s surface)1
  2. Some GHG occur naturally but they are also produced from the burning of fossil fuels (such as coal)
  3. Green House Gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone
  4. Ways to stop GHG from being emitted:
    • Energy efficient cars
    • Carpool or take the bus
    • Keep car well maintained to increase efficiency
    • Use green energy: anaerobic digestion, geothermal power, wind power, small-scale hydropower, solar power, biomass power, tidal power, and wave power
    • Plant trees
    • Buy organic products
    • Recycle
    • Buy recycled paper to reduce the loss of trees which take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere
    • Reduce your production of trash (trash in a landfill gives off methane)2
    • Use less electricity (such as more efficient light bulbs)
  5. What Sunnyvale is doing
    • Citizens are increasing the number of fuel efficient cars (hybrids)
    • Community garden reduces carbon dioxide in the air
    • Solar panels on fire stations/parks
    • Energy efficient golf cars
    • More efficient light bulbs in traffic lights
