City of Sunnyvale                     Council Member and former Mayor Otto Lee

Does My Vote Count?

Many people believe that their vote has no effect on elections at all. But that’s just a common misconception! In the city of Sunnyvale, as well as every other city, a vote truly does decide who will be an elected official or if a measure will be passed or not.
Not everyone is registered to vote, nor does everyone registered to vote exercise his/her right to vote at every election…
Therefore when a person votes, it means a lot! For example, if there are 50,000 people in a city and 20,000 are registered to vote; maybe only 10,000 of them will use their right to vote. This means that the worth of each vote becomes greater and a candidate may only win 4,000 votes out of a total population of 50,000, but its those 4,000 that made a difference and allowed that person to become an elected official.
Conclusively, if you don’t vote, you are letting those 10,000 people who vote make the decision for you. The people that are elected for positions will make decisions for the city, county, and ultimately you also. They make decisions that will affect your everyday life, like what businesses are allowed to be built in your neighborhood, the quality of your child’s education, or if they will put a new traffic light up to replace a stop sign in a dangerous intersection.

Don’t forget to do your part and vote!
