A lot of people could not wait for this day to come. Lee's family, friends, and even Sunnyvale residents were there to celebrate the commander's return.

Lee is finally home. The Navy reservist left not just a wife and two young daughters at home for a 13-month-long deployment to Iraq, but also an entire city. Lee is a Sunnyvale City Council member.

"It's absolutely awesome to be home. I obviously love this country," said Lee.

"Listening to my daughter crying this morning, I never realized how nice that would sound," says Lee.

This father of two is also a naval reservist and this is a brief break from a one year deployment to Baghdad.

NPR: 'Colbert Report' Broadcasts From Iraq

All week, soldiers have been crowding into an old palace hall on a U.S. military base near Baghdad airport to catch The Colbert Report.

Most of the troops know by now that Colbert is a large donor to several charities for wounded veterans and their families. And during the first show in the series, he did something to prove his commitment. By video link from Washington, D.C., President Obama ordered the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Gen. Ray Odierno, to shave off Colbert's perfect anchorman's hairdo. Colbert spent the rest of the week broadcasting with a crew cut.

Mercury News: Sunnyvale Council Member Otto Lee Prepares For Iraq Deployment

Except for a couple of red and green lanterns hanging forlornly on the porch, there are few signs of holiday cheer in the Lee household in Sunnyvale.

Otto and Sally Lee said they’re not sure they’ll be putting up a Christmas tree. They’ve been distracted, they said apologetically.
